Guildhall Group Project
Vibrance was an immersive experience that reshaped the City of London with light, sound and live performance.
I pitched my music for Pierre Engelhard’s visuals called Dimensions of Light – Light bounces back to me, which I won, and I did the music completely independently in the space of 2 weeks. The light show was at The Guildhall Yard.
I wanted the music to create an almost synaesthetic experience with the dreamlike visuals, using ethereal, constantly morphing sounds and voices that feel not quite human. Inspired by artists such as Oneohtrix Point Never and Jon Hopkins, the composition was designed to physically bounce around the vast space of Guildhall Yard.

This project was a great learning experience for me, working with someone who primarily does visuals and learning how to communicate effectively in professional work, and navigating and fixing complications when I had different expectations and ideas. This is definitely the most useful experience to help me understand working and communicating in professional, creative jobs.

Adrian Dunbar presents T.S. Eliot’s The Wasteland

Composer for percussion scores

Guildhall Group Project
It was a great experience working with Nick Roth and other Guildhall students on The Waste Land at the Southbank Centre as an arranger and composer for the percussion scores.
This performance, part of the London Jazz Festival, was directed by Adrian Dunbar, with the score by Nick Roth. Nick Roth’s original score was composed for a jazz quintet, and it was given to us Guildhall students to expand this performance for the full Guildhall Session Orchestra, conducted by John Harle. The writing process was so interesting, and experimental, using physical objects like leaves, and water, and we often instructed the orchestra to improvise with large constraints. Nick Roth also explained each idea with references to literature and philosophies, as well as looking into the myths of the Holy Grail and the Fisher King.

John Harle’s Bauhaus class is the perfect equilibrium of inspiring and intense. From learning and listening to Stravinsky’s scores, watching ballets, Brothers Quay stop motion, and other archival films.
On top of this, we dive into experimental subgenres of modern classical music, from minimalism to machine music, and how it links to the renowned Bauhaus school and conventions.

Inspired from these stimuli, I’ve made an electronic score exploring the different levels and textures of the Barbican, and written orchestral score for strings, inspired by Stravinsky’s octatonic scales and relentless rhythmic force.
If these works are picked, they’ll be played at the Barbican for the Bauhaus festival on the 23rd May.

Beat Herder Festival: Crew Team member at the Laundrette Stage

Volunteer Sound Team/Audio Technician
During these fun couple days at the manic Beat Herder Festival, I was setting up and patching microphones during 15 minute turnovers between bands and artists.
I had to be clear with communicating using walkie talkies and hand gestures. And it was also a struggle trying to mic up larger bands with the very limited number of cables and microphones that the studio brought with them.
I got this volunteer opportunity through Young Thugs Studio which I worked at over my gap year.

Shadowing at the Attic Leeds
On this day, I shadowed the sound engineer at the Attic in Leeds, where he showed me the process of setting up, soundchecking and capturing three separate acoustic artists. He also described the importance of the space, and how to work around/with the acoustics.
