Beat Herder Festival: Crew Team member at the Laundrette Stage

Volunteer Sound Team/Audio Technician

During these fun couple days at the manic Beat Herder Festival, I was setting up and patching microphones during 15 minute turnovers between bands and artists.

I had to be clear with communicating using walkie talkies and hand gestures. And it was also a struggle trying to mic up larger bands with the very limited number of cables and microphones that the studio brought with them.

I got this volunteer opportunity through Young Thugs Studio which I worked at over my gap year.

On this day, I shadowed the sound engineer at the Attic in Leeds, where he showed me the process of setting up, soundchecking and capturing three separate acoustic artists. He also described the importance of the space, and how to work around/with the acoustics.

Volunteer assistant music producer at Young Thugs Studio. I help set up and record bands. I am familiar with the microphone collection and how to use the equipment carefully, getting the best results possible. I am learning how to use the Cadac J series mixing desk effectively, and how to use ProTools.

I have also assisted with RSL exams, welcoming and registering students taking examinations, being personable, calm and friendly.

This connection has opened up further opportunities including being booked as a assistant sound technician at the Beat-Herder festival, 2025.

Now that I am much more comfortable in the studio, my work has now become mainly paid work too.
